Director of Diktis, Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia: Digitalization is Not Just a Trend, But a Necessity

Malang, News Online – Digitalization in Islamic Higher Education Institutions (PTKIN) is no longer just an option, but a necessity that cannot be compromised. This was emphasized by the Director of Islamic Higher Education (Diktis) at the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Phil. H. Syahiron Syamsuddin, MA, during his address at the Inaugural Conference of the Association of Islamic Higher Education Libraries (APPTIS) 2025 at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang on Tuesday (June 24) last week.

“Digitalization is not just a trend, but a necessity. Now, the Ministry of Religious Affairs has established a national internship system at PTKIN that students can access online. This is to simplify the process and ensure synergy between PTKIN,” said Syahiron.

In this strategic forum, Syahiron acknowledged that managing university libraries is no simple matter. Challenges such as organizing collections, updating service systems, and utilizing information technology require consistency and a high degree of precision. Therefore, the Ministry of Religious Affairs has made the digitization of services one of its national priority programs for 2025.

Promoting the Integration of PTKIN Library Systems
Furthermore, the Director of Diktis highlighted the importance of integrating information systems between PTKIN libraries as an effort to improve the efficiency and accessibility of collections. According to him, an interconnected information ecosystem will make library resources more evenly distributed and productive.

“Many libraries are still slow to update their collections. Ironically, even lecturers have not made much use of the latest collections available,” he said. He believes that this gap can be bridged by building an integrated national library network, where collection data, journal access, and digital-based services can be used collaboratively across campuses.

Modern Libraries, the Heart of Scientific Innovation
Concluding his remarks, Syahiron expressed his high hopes that libraries within PTKIN would become modern and inclusive information centers that not only store knowledge but also actively disseminate it quickly and intelligently. “We need libraries that not only store knowledge but also disseminate it intelligently and quickly,” he said.

The APPTIS 2025 Conference is an important moment to reaffirm the commitment to strengthening the governance of PTKIN libraries in the digital era. Through cross-institutional collaboration and support from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Islamic campus libraries are targeted to become the forefront of technology-based academic services. *UA/MM/RMr
