Preservation of Library Materials at UIN Jakarta Library: “Let's see how it's done”

Perpuspedia UIN Jkt - The maintenance and preservation of library materials is a crucial aspect of library management. Library materials, including books, manuscripts and other valuable documents, require special care to keep them in good condition and usable by future generations. Abas Khaidir, Preservation Expert at UIN Jakarta Library, shares some ways of preserving library materials that have been implemented in various libraries, including UIN Jakarta Library.

Re-binding
Rebinding is another method used to repair and strengthen books that have suffered damage to their binding. This technique involves re-stitching loose pages and repairing or replacing damaged book covers.
“Re-binding is especially important for frequently used books or reference books that have important value,” says Abas. “With re-binding, books can have a longer lifespan and remain comfortable for users to use.”
Reference books and books that are frequently borrowed by users will be re-bound periodically. This is done to ensure that the books remain in good condition and can last longer.

Restoration of Library Materials
Restoration is a more complex and detailed process, aiming to return library materials to a better condition without losing their historical value. It involves various techniques such as cleaning, stain removal and physical repair.
"Restoration is a process that requires specialized skills and care. Each library material to be restored must be analyzed first to determine the most suitable method,” said Abas. “We use non-destructive materials and standardized methods to ensure the best results.”
Ancient manuscripts and rare books that have suffered damage are restored using special techniques. One example is the restoration of manuscripts that require cleaning from stains and mold as well as repairing fragile parts of the paper.

Digitalization
Digitalization is an important step in the preservation of library material collections. This process helps preserve the original materials by reducing the frequency of physical handling and facilitating access by the users, both students, lecturers, education personnel and researchers.
UIN Jakarta Library will gradually and periodically scan manuscripts and rare documents to make digital copies. Digitalization is done to minimize damage to the original collection of library materials.

By implementing these preservation measures, UIN Jakarta Library can now maintain and protect the collection of library materials so that it remains in good condition and can be utilized by future generations. These initiatives not only protect the historical and scientific value of the collections, but also support ongoing education and research efforts. (RMr)
